Project information
The centre of rainwater harvesting in East Asia is in Sumida, a district of Tokyo, with 230,000 inhabitants. Dr. Makoto Murase, head of the "Rainwater" staff unit, has been proselytising in local politics in the island state for 20 years and proclaims: "Every household should have a dam for rainwater, especially in the big city! This would kill two birds with one stone: the unnecessary load of rainwater from roofs on sewers and sewage treatment plants and the senseless waste of precious drinking water for flushing toilets."

Project information
With his civic association "Friends of Rainwater Harvesting", Murase succeeded in convincing the city administration of the need for a rainwater museum. It was opened on 14 May 2001 in a former primary school, which was empty due to the decline in the birth rate in Sumida. Products and books on the proper use of rainwater "Made in Germany" have been given a permanent place there.
