Drinking water is suitable for human consumption and must therefore fulfil certain requirements set out in the Drinking Water Ordinance. For example, drinking water must be free from pathogens, chemical contaminants and other potentially harmful substances. It is provided by the local water supply companies, which ensure that it meets the required quality standards.
Service water, on the other hand, refers to water that is not intended for human consumption and can be used for various purposes, such as watering plants, flushing toilets or for industrial applications. Service water can come from various sources, such as rainwater, grey water or treated waste water.
